Can you drink the water out of the lakes?
The Giardiasis Virus, also known as Beaver Fever, is a virus that lives in the urine of the Beaver and can cause a number of symptoms from intestinal discomfort & diarrhea, aching muscles, stiff joints to high fever and vomiting. Everybody reacts to it differently. The odds of you getting Beaver Fever are low but the possibility is there and you do not want to ruin your fishing trip. When you are hundreds of miles north of civilization it becomes a serious situation in any form. There are things you can do at the outposts or the main camp to stay safe.

  • Collect water out in the middle of the lake away from shore and beaver huts and boil water for at least 5 minutes. Even if you are heating food that requires water make sure you use the water that you sterilized.

  • You can bring a 5-gallon water container and buy iodine sterilization pills. Iodine sterilization pills can be bought at any store that has camping equipment. You need to follow the instructions perfectly. You add the iodine pills and then 30 minutes later you add the iodine neutralizing pills which makes the water taste like water.
  • Is there a place to sleep the night before getting flown north?

  • Yes, Lower Twin Lakes Resort is located about 10 minutes from the airbase and is happy to put up groups for the night. You need to contact Karin & John and make arrangements well in advance. Their phone number is 1-888-336-5855 or you can visit their web site at

  • You can also contact Pennock's Tourist Service & Shores Motel in Nakina at (807) 329-5265

  • Buy them at Pennock's store (Variety store before you reach airbase)
